Monroe County has unveiled a comprehensive sustainable building initiative designed to promote environmentally responsible construction practices throughout the Pocono Mountains region.

Initiative Overview

The Pocono Green Building Initiative, announced by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, offers financial incentives and streamlined permitting for construction projects meeting specific environmental criteria:

Why It Matters

The Poconos' natural environment is a key economic driver, supporting a tourism industry worth over $3 billion annually. Sustainable construction practices help preserve the region's appeal while accommodating growth.

"Our mountains, forests, and waterways define the Poconos," said Commissioner Maria Santos. "This initiative ensures development happens in harmony with our environment."

Industry Response

Local builders are embracing the initiative. Companies like Habitat Building, known for sustainable residential construction, see the program as validation of their approach.

"We've been building sustainable homes for years because it's the right thing to do," said Thomas Chen, Project Manager at Habitat Building. "These incentives will help more homeowners choose green building."

Program Requirements

To qualify for incentives, projects must meet at least three of the following criteria:

1. Energy Star certification or equivalent

2. Use of sustainable or recycled building materials (minimum 20%)

3. Water conservation systems (rainwater harvesting, low-flow fixtures)

4. Solar-ready or solar-equipped construction

5. Native landscaping and stormwater management

Getting Started

The program accepts applications beginning February 1, 2026. Property owners and contractors can obtain information through the Monroe County Planning Commission.
